Ask When a KS2 pupil communicated his anxiety around caterpillars and butterflies, staff explored the idea of using a well loved story and characters to help him overcome his fear, we used the book The Very Hungry Caterpillar as a topic for My Communication sessions.
Accept The class team put together a resource list that included live caterpillars and butterfly habitat enclosure, storybooks, character toys and a playmat to create a multi-sensory approach. Pupils followed the lifecycle of the caterpillars-butterflies and enjoyed exploring the story in My Communication and Creative learning. They observed the natural changes and were able to order the lifecycle independently, pupils were able to recall key events and terminology such as Chrysalis, Herbivore, Habitat and Insect
Develop The topic provided an opportunity for all pupils to gain resilience, show empathy to wildlife, develop patience during growth and creativity during table top learning and imaginative play. Pupils then celebrated with a Butterfly release party where they were joined by pupils from the wider school community and were able to take turns gently holding the butterflies before they flew away, ending the topic with a Very Hungry Caterpillar themed snack time where pupils were able to taste some of the food from the book.
